What are Porcelain Veneers?

To cosmetically repair worn, stained, crooked and discolored teeth quickly, porcelain dental veneers have the most natural look. Porcelain dental veneers are custom-made shells designed to cover the front surface of the tooth improving appearance.
Porcelain veneers are practically undetectable when bonded to teeth and have the strength and resistance of healthy tooth enamel. Porcelain veneers remain white and can resist stains from coffee, tea, and even cigarette smoke.

Do Porcelain Veneers look natural?

Porcelain veneers are commonly mistaken for natural teeth, and they require little to no preparation. Veneers look the most natural out of all preferred tooth restoration options since the porcelain reflects light just like real tooth enamel. Porcelain veneers are even better than natural tooth enamel because they do not stain or wear, even years after the procedure, and they do not weaken the original tooth structure.

The Process of Porcelain Veneers

Our office prepares the teeth by taking impressions of your real smile to create custom porcelain veneers. Temporary veneers will be placed for approximately two weeks while the custom veneers are produced in our lab. Custom veneers are personally handmade by individuals in our lab instead of a machine. After the custom veneers return from our lab, they are bonded to the teeth and guaranteed for a full five years after insertion with regular oral health maintenance.

Are Porcelain Veneers just like regular teeth?

Porcelain veneers need some special care and precaution. They are not recommended for people who grind their teeth or suffer from severe bite problems. Porcelain veneers can become compromised by nail-biting or opening objects with your teeth. Porcelain veneers will easily continue to look brand new with a regular home cleaning system.

  • Porcelain veneers are thin coverings made of a resin composite or porcelain material that is attached to the front of the teeth to alter the shape, size, and color of your existing smile. The surface of your existing teeth is modified to allow for a firm bond with the porcelain material, which is less modification performed in a common crown procedure. The surface enamel of the tooth is cleaned and scuffed to create a better surface for adhesion. Porcelain veneers can improve a variety of dental imperfections such as discoloration, cracks, spaces, chips, crookedness, and decay creating a significant improvement in your smile.

  • Yes, there are different veneer systems. Many patients are surprised to hear there are many options to choose from, such as the types of materials used and different design methods that can influence the way your natural teeth are prepared for the veneers. The following materials are just some of the possible choices in selecting your personalized veneers; composite resin, feldspathic porcelain on platinum foil, felspathic porcelain on a refractory, pressed ceramics to full contour and pressed ceramics cut back and layered with either lithium disilicates or zirconium with multiple substrates. There are also options in how the tooth is modified and prepared for the veneer fitting. A conservative method involves no preparation often used in commercial Lumineers. There is also a minimal prep, modern prep, and a traditional prep option for any of the previously mentioned choices. The value and benefits of each option can only be properly evaluated after a thorough examination. The present color and occlusion of your smile, as well as the changes you are considering, must be taken into consideration to determine your best treatment options.

  • Many patients commonly have damaged, stained, or irregularly shaped teeth. Porcelain veneers can improve your smile and in turn, give a significant boost of self-esteem. Veneers also aid in strengthening weaker teeth that do not have decay, by merely providing additional support and structure to the natural tooth. The benefits of a polished and adequately shaped veneer are immediate and can support a growing interest in overall dental health. Porcelain veneers can also provide some orthodontic benefits in bite correction and crooked teeth without the investment of time and money in braces and other procedures. Abnormal swallowing reflexes and spaces between teeth that may cause gum disease also benefit from porcelain veneers.

  • There are a few guidelines that a patient must meet to benefit from porcelain veneers. A dental professional in a consultation must determine these criteria. For example, there is a slight degree of crookedness that is acceptable for porcelain veneers. Before the veneers are placed other dental issues may also need to be addressed.

  • Infections within the gums or the tooth root systems, as well as tooth decay, must be treated before porcelain veneers can be considered. Although, the patient does not necessarily need to possess sufficient enamel to place porcelain veneers using the latest bonding methods. Patients who habitually grind their teeth can also benefit from porcelain veneers. Porcelain veneers not only correct the aesthetics of your smile they can also replace or fix old fillings and existing cavities.

  • After you consult with a cosmetic dentist like Dr. Gwilt, you will know if you are a good candidate to benefit from porcelain veneers. There are a few steps and processes that need to be scheduled before the placement of your porcelain veneers.

  • Once Dr. Gwilt determines you to be a successful candidate that will benefit from veneers, the first step is a consultation for x-rays and impressions. Dr. Gwilt will then take the time to meet and discuss your goals and preferences in the desired results of your porcelain veneers. This consultation involves a mock-up which is a series of models created to show each patient how the final results will ultimately look. Respectable dentists like Dr. Gwilt will spend a considerable amount of time on these images to provide patients with thoughtful care and optimal results.

  • On the day of the procedure, Dr. Gwilt will remove a small fraction of enamel from the surface of each tooth to allow for better adhesion and prevent the veneers from interfering with the patient’s bite. After the small layer of enamel is removed, an impression is taken of the teeth to create the veneers. Temporary veneers are fabricated and placed while permanent veneers are designed in the lab. Once the finished veneers come back from the lab, Dr. Gwilt will put an acidic gel that dissolves a small amount of the surface minerals on each tooth to create an ideal surface for adhesion. Dr. Gwilt will also use a special light on each veneer to speed the hardening process and create a stable bond. This final bonding process is quick, and the porcelain veneers are permanently set within minutes.

  • There is little to no recovery after the placement of porcelain veneers. Some patients may be somewhat sensitive to hot and cold drinks and food at first, but this sensitivity is temporary. Once the veneers are set to the surfaces, the powerful bond is guaranteed to last for ten years and in many cases even longer.
